The latest offering from Heidi Savoie includes three brand-new interpretations of the work of Billy Strayhorn, selected along a floral theme and arranged for piano and strings.
The first track, “A Flower is a Lovesome Thing” gently unfolds delicate string lines that swirl around the piano melody. “Passion Flower” reimagines this ballad at a buoyant tempo, appearing as a stark contrast between two vast ballads. Savoie calls it “the jelly in the middle”. The set is closed with “Lotus Blossom”, which according to Duke Ellington was Strayhorn’s favourite song to hear him play.
Flowers for Billy was recorded under the watchful eye of Blake Hamilton, who mixed and engineered the entire project. These recordings were captured on the upright piano which Savoie spent her childhood practicing on. The piano touch reflects a unique sense of comfort and familiarity, like the warm, unspoken ease between lifelong friends. The violins, viola and cello were sampled from historic stradivarius instruments from the Museo Del Violino in Cremona, Italy. Combined with the piano, they form an earthy blend of softness and spice.
